Growing Organic in the Land of Milk and Cotton

Anand, Gujarat — famous for its dairy cooperatives — is now also becoming known for something else: successful organic farming with vermicompost. And at the heart of this green wave is farmer Arvind Patel.

Arvind used to grow groundnut and cotton using heavy chemical fertilisers. Yields were good initially, but year after year his soil was becoming hard and lifeless, and his costs kept rising.

The Switch to Vermicompost

In 2022, Arvind attended a GREEN INDIA AGRO FARMING workshop in Ahmedabad. He learned how earthworms turn farm waste into pure organic gold. He set up four vermicompost beds beside his farm shed.

• Produces 1.5 tonnes of vermicompost every month
• Uses it on his own groundnut, banana and vegetable crops
• Sells the surplus to nurseries in Anand and Vadodara
• Income doubled from ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 per month
